The 2023 Butcher’s Hill Oronsay Pinot Noir is a tiny-production, single-vineyard release from Pooley’s north-facing Butcher’s Hill vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Made from a selected parcel of MV6 Pinot Noir, it combines concentrated red fruit and savoury complexity with the precision, structure and longevity of this distinctive site.

Established in 1985, Pooley Wines is a family-owned Coal River Valley producer now led by third-generation winemaker Anna Pooley. The family farms its Cooinda Vale and Butcher’s Hill vineyards with a strong focus on biological and regenerative practices. Site expression sits at the centre of the winemaking, with small parcels handled individually to preserve the character of each vineyard.

Tasting Note

Perfumed spiced cherry, dark strawberry, cocoa and violets lead into cranberry, pepperberry and redcurrant. Savoury layers of dried herbs, truffle, earth and dark chocolate build with air. Soft fruit and fine tannins create a smooth entry, while firm acidity provides structure and a long, persistent finish.

Pair with duck, lamb, game birds, mushrooms or aged cheese. This will benefit from a decant when young and has the structure to develop gracefully in the cellar.
